Injections for back pain are also known as epidural steroid injections (ESI). Injections for back pain deliver medication directly to the source of pain and can provide significant pain relief.
At Minneapolis Vein Center, injections for back pain are performed by board certified interventional radiologists with advanced training in minimally invasive procedures. You will remain awake throughout the procedure. A technologist will help position you face down on the x-ray table and a local anesthetic will be used to numb the treatment area. Your radiologist will use imaging technology to guide a needle and medication directly to the source of your pain. The full effects of the medication usually occur within 48-72 hours, but may take as long as one week.
When injections for back pain are performed by an experienced physician, complications are rare. Potential risks from the procedure include infection, bleeding, and nerve damage.
In an episode of severe back pain, epidural steroid injections can provide much-needed pain relief that will allow the patient to participate in a rehabilitative program to prevent pain in the future.
If you’re experiencing severe back pain, talk to your doctor about an epidural steroid injection and decide if the procedure is right for you. If your physician recommends injections for your back pain, call Minneapolis Vein Center. Many kinds of doctors are able to perform injections for back pain, but the fellowship trained Interventional Radiologists at Minneapolis Vein Center have extensive experience in minimally invasive image-guided procedures like epidural steroid injections.
